One step farther March 29, 2010

I spent most of the weekend sewing. The back is completely done, and I pinned it yesterday. This keeps the three layers from moving so I can tie it together. Today I tied the entire quilt and began sewing the binding on. (Pics of that another day). I miscalculated how much I needed, so I have to cut more tomorrow and finish that. It is by far my least favorite part of quilting, aside from lining the layers up before pinning them. Despite my best efforts, the fabric always shifts and it takes hours to get it looking right.
But then comes my favorite part — hand-sewing the binding! There is something about doing this that I really like, aside from the fact that it means I’m almost done. I will likely rent a movie to watch while I sew. Today I watched “Amazing Grace,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Sense & Sensibility.” I don’t really watch movies or tv anymore, but it helps to do so when I’m sewing because I forget how long it’s really taking to do the work. After that, I’ll wash it once to make sure everything holds up as it’s supposed to, and wrap it up! My plan is to give it to her Easter weekend, and I should make that goal without any issues. [And I think I failed to mention, the new parents are not fond of girl colors like pink and purple, which is why this quilt is earth tones. The lightest color is actually pink, but I found I couldn’t avoid it and have it look right. This limitation actually made choosing fabric really difficult for me, so my method was to pick the whole square color first – brown with colored flowers – and pull colors from there for the rest. It managed to work out to my liking in the end.]

Also, I snagged some super cute kids’ flannel fabric at Joann’s today for $2/yd. I’m not sure what I’ll make with it, but I bought 4 yards of this one pattern that is just adorable. That’s enough to make two blankets, one to give away and perhaps one for myself. 🙂

What a great way to spend the weekend! It's looking good and you're almost done.
